Meet Mona Agarwal – an Internet Savvy who found a sense of freedom in being a reseller online.
Being born in a family of businessmen, Mona had entrepreneurial skills in her since birth. She grew up helping her parents in their business and acquired those skills over the years. Her father has a clothing business and her mother and sister runs a boutique from home.
Mona started her career with MCA in correspondence and was working as an HR in one of the reputed companies. All was going well until she had to be at home due to some medical limitations. So she gave up her HR job and tried her hands on content writing and digital media marketing. Little did she know about the pivoting role these experiences will play in establishing her dream business-crazy fashion!
Mona was always interested in doing business, since it gave her a sense of freedom. She would often buy apparels from wholesalers and would sell them among her friends and family; she enjoyed doing it. Her work was appreciated by her near and dear ones which gave her enough confidence to go ahead and build it on a big scale.
“My husband was in a transferable job, so it was very difficult for me to start with a business. Once we got settled in Mumbai, I thought of starting something which I always wanted to do.”
Being an internet savvy, the concept of doing stuff online has always fascinated her and she always dreamed of running an online business and her experience of digital marketing acted as a boon for the business idea she wanted to pursue.
In Jan 2018, she decided to start her business, driving inspiration from her sister in law, who started from scratch and today owns an established business. “To create an online presence, I uploaded my products on all social media website where I would find a huge crowd “
It started small but eventually the business accelerated. “Initially I used to get 5-6 orders a week but now its 20-25 a week.”
As no success comes without obstacles, she also faced some. As per her, figuring out the payment option, pricing the products correctly and to build people’s trust are few of the challenges she had faced in the initial stage of her business.
Make a customer, not a sale.
“My intentions were clear; I had to create a good customer base so I never really focused on gaining lot of margin. I would price my products in such a way that it would be just apt and not overpriced.”
“My husband has always supported me. He would help in pricing the products since he has better knowledge about this market.”
Like a one woman army she handled all the operations singlehandedly. Now she plans to partner with one of her friends, who runs a similar business. She also plans to build an ecommerce platform for her products.
Want to grow in life? Keep your goals straight.
“I have set a goal in terms of monetization, if am able to achieve it then I would call myself successful”
She has her goals set; she wants to continue this business from home in future as well, as she is able to best mange her family and business this way.
When asked for her elements of success, she says:
- Customers may forget what you said but they’ll never forget how you made them feel, so it’s very important that you have a satisfied customer.
- Never compromise on quality, it’ll automatically help you in increasing your volume
- Patience and flexibility is the key to success, because coming together is beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.
Her risk taking capabilities and her ability to create a good rapport with the people are few of her strengths which helps her in growing her business.
Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.
As a budding and enthusiastic entrepreneur, she wants to polish her skills on pricing the product, catalogue selection and sequencing and displaying of products in a more professional manner because she believes that more you gather knowledge in your business, easier it becomes in growing in it. She keeps herself updated with the latest fashion trends so that she can incorporate the same in her business.
She has also ventured into Kids accessories lately, which is her favorite segment of all; she is also expanding her business in Home décor etc.
Mona’s advice to budding entrepreneurs –
“Always do extensive market research before investing in any business. Identify your strength and believe in it; no force can stop you“
